Mission and Outreach at the Church of the Ascension
St. Francis of Assisi once said : “Preach the Gospel at all times; use words only when necessary”
At the Church of the Ascension we are committed to reaching out to others locally, nationally and internationally, through many outreach ventures. In so doing we live out Christ’s great commandment to love our neighbours and we become Christ’s hands and feet in this broken and hurting world. Come with us on a journey from Sudbury, Ontario to Johannesburg, South Africa and witness Christ’s love in action. Here’s how we do it:
Within our parish family
Our ministry of caring begins in the parish as we reach out in love to one other. Every Sunday morning we pray for the sick and the bereaved and those who live in Retirement Residences or Nursing Homes. Several of our members visit these parishioners and take the Eucharist to them. Twice a year our seniors are the recipients of special treats – a flower plant at Easter and a basket of cookies at Christmas. Food hampers for needy families can quickly be assembled and delivered by willing helpers at any time of the year. At Christmas these hampers include a full Christmas dinner.
“The important thing is not to think much but to love much; and to do that which stirs you to love.’ (St. Teresa of Avila)
Local and National Outreach Projects
During the winter months the Church of the Ascension has a team that works at the “Out of the Cold dinners” in downtown Sudbury. This is an outreach program of St. Andrew’s United Church and we are pleased to be a part of it. Our team prepares and serves a hot meal on four Friday evenings and to anyone in need of food or fellowship.
We support the Elgin Street Mission in downtown Sudbury throughout the year with our donations of sandwiches one Sunday a month and other items of clothing or food.
The Anglican Church Women’s Group gather weekly to make beautiful quilted sleeping bags for the homeless. As of December 2008 our count was more than 45. Once the quilts are made they are rolled up and packed with hats, mitts, sweaters, scarves, socks and a devotional book. They women also knit slippers for residents at the Algoma Hospital and mitts and slippers for the Red Cross’s Emergency closet.
The Church of the Ascension has a connection with St. John’s Anglican Church, in Fort Smith in the Northern Territories.
